Stephen & Barbara Weaver
— and their Children—
Nathan, Jennifer, and Erin
In 2008, Steve and Barb Weaver made their annual trip "home" to up-state New York to visit extended family and friends. During this visit, they made a side trip to the Finger Lakes wine region. This is where they fell in love with the idea of retiring to a wine region. Steve and Barb have lived in the south since 1975 due to Steve's career in forestry with the US Forest Service; this is where they raised their three children Nathan, Jennifer, and Erin. During the Finger Lakes trip, it was hard for Steve and Barb to think about migrating back north, so they turned their search to the south. In the Spring of 2010, the Weavers came across a land auction in western North Carolina and before they knew it, they were proud new owners of a vineyard outside of Murphy, NC.
In August 2014, area vintners, including the Weavers, worked together to create a new American Viticulture Area (AVA) called the Upper Hiwassee Highlands. The creation of this AVA has furthered the authenticity of vineyards and wineries in North Georgia and North Carolina counties. To learn more about the Upper Hiwassee Highlands AVA, click here.
After five years of remote maintenance of the vineyard, Steve and Barb retired from their life-long careers in the Atlanta, GA in November 2015. They moved to Murphy, NC to become full-time vintners/ farmers and wine enthusiasts. The year 2016 was the first year of full-time farming of the vines.
